Antique Gun Show
AUGUST 9,
2008
Admission to the 9 a.m.-4 p.m. event is $5. Visitors
may bring items from their own collections to learn
more about them and get an informal idea of value.
Lunch and refreshments will be available. Butler
Countian Richard Rosenberger, co-author of "The
Longrifles of Western Pennsylvania - Allegheny and
Westmoreland Counties," chairs the event.
Non-cartridge firearms made before 1898 will be
presented by collectors from throughout the region
in the museum's Stewart Hall at the center of the
Harmony National Historic Landmark District. Many
pieces displayed date from the 1700s and early 19th
century. While most were made to feed the family or
for target competition, some have military
histories. Many of the guns, and accessories as
well, today are considered works of art that
represent exceptional craftsmanship, and are rare
and historically significant.
The show will include several percussion target and
hunting longrifles made in Harmony ca. 1850-1890 by
Charles Flowers. Previously unknown Flowers guns
turned up at the past shows, and the museum's
impressive Ball Collection of 10 of his longrifles
are a popular permanent exhibit. |

Flowers Rifle

Harmony Museum volunteer Randy Anno examines a Colt
Model 1860 Army pistol and privately owned target rifle
made by 19th century Harmony gunsmith Charles Flowers
that will be displayed at the museum's annual antique
gun show. The revolver was the Civil War sidearm of
Harmony's Frederick Weigle. German silver inlays on the
percussion rifle's stock include figures of a squirrel
and pointing hunting dog. |
