Please visit our BCTCB member, the Cranberry Township Historical Society. The CTHS will resume seasonal tours of the Sample One-room Schoolhouse on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 through Saturday, September 28, 2007. Regular hours of operation are Wednesday's from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm and on Saturday's from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. The school can also be toured by special appointment. Refer to our website for details. We are located at 2525 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township, PA 16066 - next to the Municipal Center.

Historic Harmony Inc.

National Historic Landmark District. Washington visited an Indian village here and survived a shooting during his 1753 mission that precipitated the French & Indian War. In 1804 Harmony was founded as the first home of the German communal Harmony Society. Exhibits: Native Americans, Washington, Harmonists, Mennonites, Charles Flowers longrifles, the oil era, Victoriana. Antiques, crafts, shopping, dining, accommodations, family attractions, state parks and other historic sites nearby! 

The Harmony Museum, established in 1955 and one of the region's few history museums that operates all year, is open 1-4 p.m. daily except Mondays and holidays. Regular admission fees are $5 for adults and $2 for children for a guided tour that includes three historic buildings.

Maridon Museum

The Maridon opened on May 8th, 2004. It is the only museum in the Western Pennsylvania region with a specific focus on Chinese and Japanese art and culture. The museum — both the objects and the buildings that house them— is the gift of Mary Hulton Phillips. Located in downtown Butler.

Japanese Brush Painting Classes.
Instructed by Laurie Bloomberg.  Five beginner classes on April 4, 11, 25 and May 2 and 9.  Members $13.00 per class. Non-members $15.00.  Materials are included.  Space limited. Call for reservations.

Muddy Creek Oil Field
At Moraine State Park, Phone: 724-368-8811

Oil Well Demonstrations- scheduled throughout the summer and fall. 
An original oil well site has been preserved and restored within Moraine State Park. The mechanism is powered by a one cylinder Bessemer gas engine now run on propane which pulls the rod lines through a “Bessemer #2 Power” just like the old days.


Demonstrates oil production, interprets area’s oil era. Seasonal.  The Moraine, McConnell’s Mill, Jennings Commission has seasonal demonstration days at the Muddy Creek Oil Field Site in Moraine State Park. The exhibit will be open to the public and operating. Access to the well site can be obtained by taking Old Route 422 west from the Prospect interchange and proceeding about ½ mile beyond the DCNR District Office and boat launch area parking lot.

Saxonburg Museum, Roebling Workshop Early history of Saxonburg and its founder John Roebling, designer of the Brooklyn Bridge. Seasonal. 

Museum exhibits include Roeblings, communications, blacksmith, general store, laundry.

John Roebling Workshop is the 1840 shop where suspension bridge pioneer Roebling made first wire cable is on National Register of Historic Places. Restored by Saxonburg Historical and Restoration Commission, open by appointment.

If you are interested in Heritage School course offerings but are unable to fit a week long course into your schedule, try our fall friends special.  We are offering a two-day option for all Heritage School courses listed for September through November.  With a minimum four students enrolled, you can take the two-day option, so bring your friends and try out the courses listed on our fall schedule. 

Fall courses include Blacksmithing, Woodworking, Eastern Woodland Cooking, Folk Art Painting, Storytelling, Tea and the Social Graces, Glass Mosaics, Civil War Quilting, Native Dolls, Nature and Animal Pathways, Wall Murals, 18th Century Writing, Acrylic Painting, Beading, Canvas Floor Cloths, Writing and Illustrating, Natural Dyes & Wild Teas, Stained Glass, Native Style Drum, Wampum, Making Tools, Making Buckets, Making Wheelbarrows, Making Benches, Making a Cradle and Restoring a Hay Wagon.  Most two-day options are Mondays and Tuesdays.  Call or email for details.

Ryan Stauffer is offering two-day options on Knife Making in the Blacksmith Shop and David Hughes is offering a two-day introduction to Silversmithing. Gerry Hall is offering two-day Herb workshops in September and early October. Call Nancy Lawry at The Conservancy for details.
