Harmony Silvester Celebration
(Silvester is the German term for New Year's Eve)

DECEMBER 31, 2008
Celebrate New Year's Eve from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM on December 31st, 2008.
The family focused event will begin at 2:00 PM with the Silvester 5K race.  This race will begin in Harmony's square.  Awards and prizes will be awarded.  Throughout the afternoon,  there will be outdoor music and exhibits.   Many of the shops in town will be offering after-Christmas specials.  At 6:00 PM (when it is midnight in Germany) there will be a count down to "midnight" followed by a fireworks blast in the German tradition.

www.harmony-pa.us

Harmony Borough announces plans for New Years Eve “Silvester” Celebration.
Harmony Borough to celebrate New Years Eve six hours early in honor of its German heritage.

The town will kick off its afternoon celebration at 2:00 PM with the Harmony Silvester 5K Run through the town and the surrounding countryside.   Awards will be given to the top finishers and there will be random prize drawings so that every runner will have a chance to win a prize.

Following the race, a German band will perform on the front porch of the Harmony Inn from 3:30 until 5:30.   At the same time, traditional German New Years Eve activity, lead drop fortune telling, will be occurring at the Wagner House Garden behind the Harmony Museum Shop.

When the concert ends, the countdown to “New Years” will begin.   At 6:00 PM, which is midnight in Germany,   revelers will welcome in the New Year with the Sign Innovation Ball Drop and the Silvester Fireworks Blast sponsored by Armstrong.

Weather permitting; visitors will be able to ride the restored Harmony Short Line Bus around the community.   Tours of the Harmony Museum will be available from 2:00 until 4:00 PM.   Food and drink will also be available at the Harmony Museum, Otto and Gerts, and the Harmony Inn.

According to Council President, Jeff Smith, this event was designed with young families in mind.   “While First Night Celebrations have become popular in recent years, most parents know how difficult it is to take a six year old out at midnight.   This event will allow parents to take their children to a New Years Celebration while they are still awake and, hopefully, before it gets too cold.”
